The ABC Television
Network aired a Davey and Goliath documentary
this fall produced by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) This
program is presented through the National Council of Churches (NCC)
and the Interfaith Broadcast Commission (IBC). Click

The program is titled, "Oh
Davey! History of the 'Davey and Goliath' Television Series." It began airing across the country
on Sept. 14, 2003. (Check local listing for dates
and times.)

This
one-hour documentary showcases the development of Davey and Goliath,
the stop-motion animation children's program created for the
Lutheran church by Clokey Productions between 1960 through 1975.
It features original clips of Davey and Goliath,
as well as interviews with the original animator and creators, Art
and Ruth Clokey. Other interviews include Richard Sutcliffe,
the original executive producer of the series and R. Marshall Stross, former director of the Commission on Press.
The program highlights how
stop-motion animation is created and also includes the
development of characters, photos, storyboards, scripts,
commercials and public service announcements as well as insight on
new productions. Others appearing in the program are the ELCA's
executive producers for new productions, Eric Shafer and Kristi
Bangert, as well as producers and animators involved in the
production of a new holiday special being created by the Clokey
Productions Studio.

| The
documentary is hosted by Clifton Davis and Mary
McDonough. Davis is best known for his roles on the hit
network television sitcoms, "That's My Mama" and
"Amen." On the set of "Amen" he played a
minister. Later, this actor, producer, singer, songwriter
became an ordained minister of the Seventh Day Adventist
church. He also wrote the Jackson Five's Grammy-nominated
song, "Never Can Say Goodbye." Davis has appeared
in feature films such as "Any Given Sunday,"
"Kingdom Come," and Spike Lee's "Crooklyn."
McDonough is best remembered for her role as Erin on the
highly acclaimed show, "The Waltons" a role she
played when she was just 10 years old. Most recently, Mary
McDonough has appeared on "West Wing,"
"ER," "Will and Grace" and "Ally
McBeal." McDonough is also a director and has received
awards and recognition for her short film, "For The
Love of May." She is the national spokesperson for
Lupus LA, a foundation she has been very active with since
being diagnosed with lupus. She is also a member of the
advisory board of the National Center for Policy Research
(CPR) for Women and Families.
This documentary promises to
highlight the richness, diversity and quality of Davey and
Goliath for children and adults. Fans will learn about
progress and new programs for a new generation of Davey and
Goliath viewers.

Ava Odom Martin, broadcast media production manager for the ELCA.
The studio portions are done by Post Effects 3D virtual studio
in Chicago.

A screening of the documentary brought 28
people to the Jackson (Mississippi) Hilton Hotel on Tuesday
evening, November 4, 2003. The group included a local ELCA
pastor and the area ecumenical association director as well as
delegates to the National Council of the Churches of Christ in
the USA General Assembly, meeting in Jackson. A number of
those present took time to share their stories of growing up
(or raising their children) with Davey and Goliath.
